THE UNIQUE STORY, AS TOLD BY THE HOME OWNER
This cottage, the Lodela barge, is already the project of a lifetime. The name 'Lodela' stands for the second life of this boat. This second life began with a beautiful encounter with a young Frenchman who fell in love with barges during his studies in Belgium.
However, this 'love affair' did not start off well: this young Frenchman wanted to accommodate his barge in the Canal du Midi, one of the oldest canals still in operation in Europe, which was built by order of Louis XIV. In order for the barge to pass through this old canal, it had to be shortened. This was followed by 1 year of work in Belgium. Once the size problem was solved, the barge still had to be taken to France. This trip took two months: two months during which the owner did not know exactly where his barge was.
Since the vessel was originally used for trade, major installation and fitting-out work also had to be carried out to make the hold the perfect accommodation it is today. After 4 years of work, the dream of this young Frenchman, who admired the barges from the window of his student room, came true.
This beautiful story has been going on for over 21 years now and the owner's passion for Lodela is just as strong as ever. Initially, Lodela was to become the permanent home of the owner, who would have followed him on his various business trips. Eventually, after settling in Carcassonne, this nature lover decided to open up his peaceful oasis to tourists. The love for his barge is also reflected in the welcome the owner offers his visitors. The care taken in the work and the materials chosen for the renovation are evidence of craftsmanship to provide the best possible stay.
DETAILS
- This houseboat on the Canal du Midi is a former commercial barge, used in Belgium and France in the 1930s. After a thorough renovation in 2005, it has now become a particularly attractive vacation home.
- The boat has a shaded terrace with a beautiful view of the famous Canal du Midi, which has earned a place on the World Heritage list. There is even a small garden on shore laid out for you.
- The region offers many attractions, such as the famous medieval center of fortified Carcassonne with two World Heritage monuments. Visit the Cathar castles, the giant gorge at Cabrespine, wine cellars and many abbeys, such as Fontfroide.
- In the immediate vicinity of this floating, pet-friendly vacation home you will find a small lock, typical of the Canal du Midi. Here you can see how the workings of the canal really come to life.

- For safety reasons, the rental of the boat is strongly discouraged for families with children under 7 years old or families whose children cannot swim yet.
